Montana Indian Education Association 23nd Annual Conference

Dear MIEA Members and Friends:

The Board of Directors of the Montana Indian Education Association invite you to the 23rd Annual MIEA Spring Conference, April 1 – 4, 2004, at the Holiday Inn Parkside in Missoula. The MIEA Conference has not been in western Montana for a number of years and we look forward to being in Missoula.

It has been a very active year for MIEA and we look forward to the big “finale” of our spring conference. We recently held a Statewide Indian Parent Forum in Billings in October 2003 and an Indian Education Law and Legal Issues Forum in November 2003. These activities are a part of our leadership responsibility to provide quality and equitable educational opportunities for Montana. It is important that we provide training and awareness to help in efforts to restore our Native languages, improve the graduation rate of Indian students, secure more Indian teachers and administrators in our public schools, and allow all Indian students the opportunity to experience success in our educational systems.

The new federal law, No Child Left Behind, brings many new policies and requirements that impact Indian children in our schools. Many of the schools that did not make the “adequate yearly progress” list are schools with a significant number of Indian students. We have to work together and develop workable strategies to help our students be successful on an equitable level with all students.

The Montana Office of Public Instruction has received a Department of Education Dropout Prevention Grant. As a part of this grant, they will host speakers and a “dropout prevention strand” of workshops throughout the conference.

In addition to other student activities, we will again select five students (grades 9-12) to receive a $100.00 scholarship each for their presentation to conference participants on the theme, “Nurturing American Indian Leadership Into The Future.” We hope you will encourage your students to participate in this activity.

We will also recognize outstanding leaders in educational achievement awards at the Sunday luncheon, elect new Board of Directors, and take action on Resolutions you may wish to submit to the membership.

The MIEA Conference will be a great opportunity to learn, share your successes, and network with others who are working to define the educational future of American Indian people. When we are united in this effort, we can make a difference.
