Montana Indian Education Association 24th Annual ConferenceDear MIEA Members and
Friends: Indian Education had a great victory in April 2004 with the Sherlock Decision and we now await the Supreme Court Decision on Indian Education for All. We hope we will be able to celebrate a Supreme Court Victory at our spring conference. MIEA has been a voice of Montana's Indian Education Community for over 20 years and there have been many, many people who have been willing to step forward to serve as a member of the Board of Directors in the past 23 years. We must always remember the individuals who have come before us and helped with many of the Indian education battles of the past and we thank you for your commitment to improving Indian education in Montana. Progress has been made in many areas such as our Tribal Colleges, our language immersion programs, Class 7 teachers, Tribal Education Departments, Indian Education for All, and more Indian people serving in leadership roles on our school boards. But, many of the challenges of the past continue and we need to take action as our theme recommends to find solutions to the issues that create barriers to educational success for Indian students. The MIEA Conference is a time for us to share what works and to identify resources we can use in our classrooms throughout Montana. And, the MIEA Conference is a time to have our "voice" heard through our speakers, workshops, and activities. We look forward to Saturday's Reception when we will recognize the Class 7 Teachers in Montana who are teaching the Native Languages and culture in our K-12 schools. Also, it is always fun to attend the talent show which has become a highlight of the conference. We will, of course, end the conference with the Awards Luncheon on Tuesday when we honor individuals who are making a difference in Indian education in Montana. The Legislature is in session during the Conference, so you may want to make plans to visit the Capitol and let your representatives/senators know how important Indian Education is for Montana. We will see you all in April - it is going to be a great conference and you don't want to miss it. When
we are united in this effort, we can make a difference |
